Mother Love: Jenni Dutton
In this series of works titled The Dementia Darnings Jenni Dutton uses photos of her mother, who has dementia, reproduced as large-scale portraits in wool and thread. The source photos were taken throughout her mother’s life and were selected because of their familiarity and significance to the artist. These iconic portraits raise questions relating to loosing the threads of memory combined with the inevitable threads which tie mothers and daughters together. Stitches within the works bind and unravel reflecting her mother’s inability to catch and keep hold of the memory of past experiences, information and events. The process of creating each piece is slow, the intensity of each one mirroring the nature of this mother/daughter relationship.
