Feather
Dress (2002)
This dress is made
from fine wire mesh, pheasant feathers and lined with a shiny fabric,
Pheasants run wild over the land where we live and are bred to be
shot. There is a strong analogy between being a hunted animal and
a close fitting short dress with a very femine shape. Is it about
displaying ones beauty? Or is it a statement about women as potential
prey? Is it a comment on the way we are seduced by beauty and the
sensuous nature of the material and fail to notice that to make this
some this dress there was a violence involved to achieve this.
Whatever it alludes to there is a strong response to this dress, 'Ooh
and ah', the beauty and texture of the carefully laid feathers touches
a really sensuous cord, of people of all ages but particularly in
men.
